How to Get Over Someone

By: Amy Cunningham

How to get over someoneBreakups can be tough, and most people end up wondering how to get over someone at one point or another. The standard advice is that it will get better in time. While that's technically true, the knowledge that things will eventually get better doesn't provide a great deal of comfort if you want to know how to get over someone immediately. There are a few steps you can take to ease the heartache, and also a number of things you should avoid doing.

Avoid Contact

The most important part of getting over someone is to avoid contact with that person. You may find yourself making excuses to see your ex, but you need to remain strong. If you feel the need to return possessions in person, or come up with any other reason to contact your ex, try to remember that it will only make the separation more difficult. Any contact is likely to just reopen old wounds, which will make it all the more difficult to move on.

It's very common to find yourself fixating on someone after a breakup, especially if you had a large emotional investment in the relationship. You may find yourself thinking about your ex constantly, either remembering happy times or mourning a future that can no longer happen. The best way to stop this destructive line of thinking is to find something else to occupy your time. You may not feel like going out with your friends or taking up a new hobby, but those are both great ways to help yourself move on.

Go Out with Friends

Going out with friends and finding ways to improve yourself can help you get over someone, but you also need to face your feelings and emotions. A serious breakup often represents a huge life change, and there are valid feelings of loss that need to be dealt with. If you can come to terms with these feelings, you will be one step closer to finally moving on.

Reassess

It can also help to take an honest look at the relationship. Most breakups happen for a reason, and it may be helpful to identify that reason. You and your ex may have had conflicting personality types, outlooks or plans. If you are able to make a logical assessment of the situation, you will have a better understanding of yourself and what you need out of a relationship.

If you still find yourself wondering how to get over someone for good, the final step is acceptance. You need to accept that your ex is no longer in your life and that you will ultimately be better off. Even though the experience has been painful, you will be stronger and better equipped for future relationships. Before long, you may even be ready to tell a heartbroken friend how to get over someone.
